Lunch at Black Bear Japanese Fusion (Markham, Ontario)

3:39:00 PM

For this awesome food lunch adventure, I rallied the foodie colleagues to visit a new restaurant on Hwy 7. Previously, this location was the famous and popular "Sushi on 7" AYCE restaurant. After so many years (guessing 9+), the business was closed and replaced with another new comer. This new comer was "Black Bear Japanese Fusion." Surprisingly, I found this place through Instagram. Our journey to this restaurant was a long one with the construction on Hwy 7 (why won't it end?!?!?).

Atmosphere:

We arrived early for lunch and it was a ghost town. The decor was dark with two large animal wall murals. The murals were interesting but distracting with no relevance to the food. The renovations of this place were done nicely.

Service:
The restaurant had 3 front end staff for the restaurant this day. It was unfortunate that we didn't get any service at the beginning and had to request drinks and menu for our table. During the meal, I noticed that it was very difficult to flag for service. All 3 front staff were working to get 1 bill out ...  Probably novice staff still in training...

Food:
There were unique menus for lunch and dinner with a mixed of Japanese/American fusion dishes. For our foodie lunch, we ordered the following:

  • Chicken Katsu Burger ($11) (can get fries or salad)
  • Black Bear Melted Cheesy Burger ($11) (fries or salad)
My colleagues remarked that the Black Bear Burger was just a tasting average burger. The ingredients for this dish were: fresh beef patty, tomato, lettuce, bacons & melted cheese.  I was curious as to where the Japanese element was ... If you do plan on labeling your restaurant name on a dish, this dish should be OUTSTANDING.

I tried the chicken katsu burger. The Katsu was really long and extended past the entire burger by 100%. The katsu burger was served with mayo and tonkatsu sauce. I could barely taste the tonkatsu but the chicken katsu was juicy and hot. There were some parts of the katsu that were overcooked.

Verdict:
Kind of pricy for a burger with Japanese Fusion. This restaurant has some potential but the burgers were definitely average. Service could easily be improved given that it is a new restaurant.
